Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

applies knowledge of different processes used to catch crabs, prawns and squid in various situations

locates crabs, squid and prawns and uses suitable tackle and apparatus to catch the required species according to legislative and organisational requirements

maintains crabs, squid and prawns in pristine condition and cleans and prepares the catch for a variety of uses.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure participation in multiple fishing activities to catch crabs, prawns and squid, in local conditions to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

locations to catch crabs, prawns and squid

fishing tackle and apparatuses to catch and process crabs, prawns and squid.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of safe participation and demonstration of locating, catching and preparing crabs, prawns and squid

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedures, and different methods of catching crabs, prawns and squid

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Required skills

problem-solving skills to:

source locations for catching crabs, squid and prawns

determine the differences between crab pots

determine the most appropriate method of catching a species according to the situation

planning and organising skills to:

select and use crab pots, cast nets and lures to catch crabs, prawns and squid

to handle and keep catch in pristine condition

prepare species for its end-use

numeracy skills to measure crabs and determine undersized crabs.

Required knowledge

legislation and organisational policies and procedures to enable safe and legal conduct of all activities

minimal impact codes to ensure protection of the fishing environment

habitats of crabs, squid and prawns to assist in locating various species, in and off shore

differences between male and female crabs to enable the return of female crabs

methods of handling and keeping crabs, squid and prawns in pristine condition

processes used to maintain, clean and prepare catch for its end-use.

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below. Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.

Tackle and apparatus may include:

drop nets

crab pots and hooks

squid gidgies, jigs and lures

bait nets

throw nets

dab nets.

Locations may include:

tidal estuaries

inshore waters

jetties

wharves

rock walls.

Relevant legislation may include:

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
